Spartan Scenic Spartan's Physical Education.

Scenic Middle School: Physical Education Policies

1. Participation and grading:

Students are required to dress down into P.E. uniform and participate in each class. Students with a parental or medical request for limited or restricted activity due to injury or illness will be provided with a modified program. Parental notes are good for up to three days; extended excuses need to be issued from medical personnel. Students are expected to dress down and participate in the physical activity or modified activity unless notified otherwise. For parental notes that request NO PE an alternate written assignment will be issued in which a student may earn up to 2.5 of the daily points.  A student may come in during a PE make up session to earn up to full credit for the day they were excused. It is recommended that a student participate in the daily activity or modified activity in order to earn up to full credit unless an injury prohibits them from doing so.

Students are graded daily by demonstrating the following (but not limited to).

•  Being On time and having the proper PE attire (clothes and shoes).

•  Demonstrate correct form and technique (try to have good form).

•  Highly active in activities (giving your best effort).

•  Follow directions and show good sportsmanship.

•  Be Safe Be Respectful Be Responsible in regards to the locker room, equipment and others

Absences will result in points not being earned, unless a make up sheet is completed. Make up sheets are due within one week after the student's return to school.

P.E. make up

a. School related absences are excused, and no make up is needed (although you must be responsible and notify your teacher).

b. Any non-school related absences must be made up by obtaining a make up sheet and completing an at home activity. Students are expected to make up absences from class. Make up sheets are available from the P.E. staff. They may also be downloaded HERE.

2. Proper P.E. uniform

Scenic's P.E. uniform consists of Green shorts with no pockets and a gray T-Shirt with no pockets. Uniforms are available for purchase in the main office. Student's shirt is to be labeled with the student's first initial and last name. Students must wear athletic shoes. Students are allowed to wear sweatpants and/or a sweatshirt over their P.E. uniform only when the daily activity requires the student to leave the gym. Both P.E. shirt and shorts are to be visible during roll call; daily points may be deducted if instructor must ask to see P.E. uniform. Uniforms are not to be altered unless cleared by the PE Staff. Students are expected to wear the Scenic Uniform unless a special circumstance is cleared with the PE Staff.

3.  P.E. loaner uniform
Loaner P.E. uniforms are available in case students forgets their P.E. uniform.  Loaners may be checked out from the P.E. staff; however there are consequences for students using loaners during each grading period.

1st time = a verbal warning is given and results in a loss of points.

Multiple times = results in a loss of points and a possible referral to the dean of students may be issued.

4. Responsibilities and expectations

•  Athletes will participate in class activities on game days. This is a District 6 policy.

•  Students are responsible for their own personal belongings including their P.E. uniform. Students are assigned a lock and are not to share the combination with anyone. Students are responsible for the cost of a lock if damaged or broken. Personal locks are not allowed. If a student loses their lock, the P.E. staff can issue a new one. If the original lock is found the student will not be charged for a lost lock.

•  No gum chewing or eating of any kind is allowed during P.E. classes for safety reasons.

•  Students are expected to make up absences from class. Make up sheets are available from the P.E. Staff or online.

Locker room / Gym rules

NO GUM, FOOD, OR DRINK No running, throwing objects, sitting on lockers, wrestling, pushing, shoving, or any other type of horseplay or fighting. No yelling in gym or locker room, use indoor voices only. Dress down, then quietly sit on your number and wait for roll call or the dismissal bell. Never give anyone your locker combination. Respect others and their property. White board will list the daily activity; any additional information needed will be given by instructor.

Dressing down

Students will have 5 minutes to dress and quietly sit on their number ready for roll call. Names must be written in the designated area of their uniform only. Nicknames are NOT allowed. Socks and athletic shoes must be worn. Shoes must be tightly laced and tied. Sweatpants and sweatshirts are allowed to be worn over the P.E. uniform only if the daily activity requires the student to leave the gym.

Daily activity

Throughout the year we will do many different activities that we hope that your student will enjoy. Students are expected to put forth maximum effort and follow rules at all time. This is for the safety of all children. During PE the noise level is often very loud do to the nature of the activity and the size of the classes. In order to keep things safe and running smoothly we have a few simple procedures that your student should know.

•  Muscle Groups - Students will learn different muscle groups of the body and exercises that help strengthen them. Students will be taught different muscle groups throughout the year and an activity to strengthen that muscle group. At any time during physical education if a teacher calls out the current muscle group students are expected to touch the muscle group and sit silently within 3 seconds with no equipment in their hands. This is for the safety of all students so that no equipment is in the air while students are waiting for direction of the teacher. This works extremely well to get the attention of a large number of students quickly and quietly.

•  When 6 Min Bell Rings - Students will sit or take a knee just as if a muscle group was called out. They will wait silently for the teacher's instruction before going to the locker room to dress down.

•  Hands to yourself - This is self explanatory, unless instructed by a teacher to do a partner activity, hands and feet are to be kept to yourself at all times.

End of class:

Students will have about 6 minutes to dress back into school clothes after the teacher dismisses the class from the daily activity. Students are expected to lock their lock, return items to their basket, and keep their area clean. Students may not leave the locker room until the bell rings and dismissed by a teacher. If students are ready early, they are allowed to sit on their number and visit (quietly). Lining up at the door, will NOT be tolerated.
